Dark Dayz: VR Dawn (Chapter 20)
BIT 20: BYTE VS BARK
The Werewolf Brute BYTE cracked its neck, glaring, snapping, and barking. As it hunched over, the beast extended its arms and curled its clawed fingers.
My legs were lead-heavy. I needed to attack, but to do so might mean death. Zimea, a higher-level player, had taken one hit from the beast and nearly died. Susie-Q whimpered, but her Grape Vine stood fearless, snapping its thorny vines. At her low level, the familiar might only die; a pointless effort.
I took a step towards my doom.
“Don’t!” Zimea moaned.
The BYTE’s ears perked, and it turned, facing the downed Sniper.
I activated Battle Cry and brandished Scalpel. “Face me!”
Its eyes turned on me, and it threw back its head, howling. I had my opening. With a lunge, I brought

BIT 19: A MANOR OF SPEAKING
Pillars of luminescence rose around us. I closed my eyes and set my feet, prepared for the teleport. Before we even left where we stood, Susie-Q’s crying came to ear. My heart sank deep and twisted in my chest. The poor girl. With a low pop, we vanished, and everything went white. Another pop left us standing once more as the pillars of light dissipated.
Zimea and I exchanged glances. She frowned and nodded to the floor. Susie-Q sat knees hugged to chest. She sobbed no longer but didn’t say a word. Beside her, a cat-sized vine spider stood on the ground.
I tilted my head. “Is that a Grape Vine?”
“One came and attacked after you left.” Susie-Q sighed. “I tamed it.”
Pan walked a few strides ahead. He turned and offered a hand to Susie-Q. “Losing a loved one is never easy, but

BIT 18: PLATFORMING
In my dive, I slammed into Susie-Q. We tumbled through the hedge and into the air. I wrapped my arms around her, and we crashed onto a grated platform. She shrieked, and I lifted my eyes. On each side were creatures of nightmare. As large as the biggest of dogs, eight-legged monsters stood around, with vines whipping from their backs. The vines weren't just a trap; they were living creatures.
“No sudden moves,” I whispered into Susie-Q’s ear.
I stood, watching the plant arachnids with caution. They were spiders for sure, their bodies made of foliage, but their eight eyes were red balls of blood or maybe they were berries. Their thorny vines swayed as they watched us.
Susie-Q stood and glanced each way. “Should I use Rachel?”
The spiders' names appeared, Lv09 Grape Vine. Six such creatures existed.

BIT 17: GREEN THUMB
Pan appeared too calm. So much so, I found myself annoyed. He glanced at the Groundskeeper, a hint of his usual smile cracking at the corners of his lips.
“A Dungeon where we begin in a trap?” Zimea blew hair from her eyes. “This is just too much. Is Z to blame?”
Pan broke into a grin. “This is a rather intriguing turn of events, isn’t it?”
Bernie walked around the table, the floor creaking beneath each step. In his hand, he held a long knife. He stepped behind me and I swallowed, eyes closed, fearing my throat to be slit at any moment. But nothing happened.
“What is it?” Pan looked past me. “Were you not programmed with the guts to kill us?”
Bernie snickered. “You PCs and your assumptions.”

BIT 16: SHEEP’S CLOTHING
We walked through the village, on edge. Pan dealt with the PKers, but that didn’t mean we should think us safe. Monsters lurked somewhere nearby. The cloudy sky darkened, and a chilly rain fell.
“Damn...” I grumbled.
“What’s wrong?” Susie-Q skipped next to me. “Are you cold?”
“Yes.” I shivered. “It’s strange being able to tell the temperature of a game, but it’s not the degree that bothers me; it’s the water itself.”
“What’s so wrong about a little rain?” Zimea stared straight, marching.
“Quit complaining! You’re a real pain!”
“Can’t help it.” I hung my head. “I've hate

BIT 15: TO KILL A PLAYER
They outnumbered and outleveled us. Helping Joker's brother wasn't possible. Still, I had to try. I moved to leave but froze. The group of PKers stopped, too, as a shadow landed before them. A figure formed, and Pan stepped forward to face the group.
Joker turned and grabbed my collar. “Please help Orion!”
Susie-Q covered her mouth. “What should we do?”
Zimea turned and stormed from the room.
I nodded. “Looks like we’re getting into a brawl.”
“Thank you!” Joker wrapped her arms around me. “I’m forever in your debt!”
“Thank me when we’ve survived.”
Sword drawn, I ran. My boots thudded beneath me and two sets of footsteps followed. I leaped the stairs to the

BIT 14: NOTHING TO LOSE
That one bite drained my life bar to half. A symbol of a crescent moon flashed before my eyes, then appeared on my health bar. How could I explain? Panic tried to set in, but I fought. I needed to stay focused. A cure for lycanthropy had to exist. If I didn't believe, I couldn't go forward.
With a sigh, I pulled out a Medium Potion and guzzled it. My HP returned to full, and I closed my menu. I required time to contemplate everything, my purpose, and my role in Dark Days. A message popped, startling me.
From Zimea: 'I’ve landed. Pan, as he said, is nowhere. Susie-Q is on her way back. I noticed your HP dropped. What happened?'
The message glared in my eyes. I didn’t want to lie, but truth wasn’t the best choice. For the moment, I'd stay quiet.
I typed my message: 'Another Nevermore attacked. It was

BIT 13: UNKINDNESS
We formed a tight pack as the Unkindness circled. Each of the huge, black birds bore a red health bar. From so far away, I couldn’t tell their levels.
“Do we fight them, or what?” I held my sword ready.
Zimea raised her flintlocks. “I can’t get any of them. They’re too high.”
“No worries.” Pan wore his trademark grin. “They’ll come to us.”
“Oh, that doesn’t make me worry at all.” I gritted my teeth.
Susie-Q held Rachel tight to her chest, and the cat issued a low growl. The first bird screeched a loud caw, and dove, talons extended.
“Look out!” Zimea fired at the attacking raven.
The bird barrel rolled, dodging. It came in close enough, I could classify it; a

BIT 12: QUOTH THE RAVEN
“This is the Creature Tamer?” Zimea gawked at the petite girl who stood no taller than four and a half feet.
Susie-Q offered her hand. “Nice to meet you!”
Zimea hesitated but shook and regarded me. “Can I talk to you for a second?”
“What is it?” I cocked my head as she dragged me away.
“She’s a child!” Zimea hissed.
“You don't know that.”
“And you’re okay with her risking her life, either way?”
I shrugged. “I’m not okay with it.”
Zimea punched my arm. “Then why get her involved?”
“Ow!” I rubbed my bicep. “It’s not like we have a choice!”
